So I mentioned elsewhere I downloaded the digital versions of the old robotech books and started reading those again. I highly recommend them if you enjoy reading and robotech. In some ways I think they're much better than the show. They're conveniently organized into 3 book collections for around 6$ on Amazon, well worth it. Obviously the robotech videos are a good source for inspiration! I own the original series and Southern Cross plus a few stand alone movies, still need to pick up Invid Invasion. The books come off a little darker than the show and they made me think of the newer Battlestar Galactica series. They share some common themes and plot lines. I could only hope a live action robotech series would be similar. There's a ton of anime, I own some gundam series and those are giant mecha shows so still good for inspiration. Anything else? Top Gun maybe

Fang of the Sun Dougram Armored Trooper VOTOMS Super Dimension Century Orguss Patlabor
Off the top of my head. There's tons of mecha anime, but those top two are my favorites.

8th MS Team and 0080 are the best of the Gundam offerings. Knights of Sidonia was pretty good. Evangelion is always fun. GoLion/Voltron Starblazers Pacific Rim Robot Jox
All depends on taste and mood really.

Full Metal Panic is one of my favorites. It's a little more realistically realized about how and why mechs interact with other AFVs and regular infantry. They are also powerful weapons, but hardly invincible. The second season has a bit more mech action than the first, and unless you like humorous relationship anime skip over the middle spin off season FUMOFFU.

The newer entries in the macross series are good, Macross zero and Macross frontier. Macross Plus is one of my all-time favorite anime series.
Gundam 00 was an interesting spin on its usual concept.
Aldnoah Zero just finished it's first session a few weeks ago, I was surprised by that one.
I feel like I am forgetting a suggestion for a show, I will add it in if I figure it out. The Star Wars: Rogue Squadron books might also work since you have been reading the Robotech books.

I think I own all the full metal panic stuff, Macross and Gundam! Ayleron - I used to own the rogue squadron books but haven't read them in ages. Might have to download them electronically at some point though.
