Everyone has their own squadron and/or unit that fell in the shadows of the likes of Rick, Roy and Max. Now is the time for them to shine! Show us your paint designs and give a brief back story of the em. (Did they save the SDF-1 in a classified mission, were they the unit of Tomahawks that took part in the Daedalus maneuver?) I'll start. VF-111 Sundowners my second favorite Squadron after VF-84 "Jolly Rogers" (which was already depicted in the show) Led by Cmdr Jasper McGillis, was the lead squadron in operation "Ransack" Their purpose was to slow the pursuing Zentredai fleet from overtaking the SDF-1 on her voyage back to earth by getting on board and causing as much Havoc and damage as possible. (once it was learned that the Zents could not repair their own equipment.) They fly slightly modified VFs designated VF-1A+ the precursor to the VF-1R. The cockpit is a Block 6 arrangement with the transformation controls on the HOTAS instead of the panel. Armed with three head lasers, the SDF air-wing nose lasers, and the gun pod is a 55mm single barreled three breech revolver cannon, allowing more ammunition to be carried yet still retaining the rate of fire but at the cost of sacrificing barrel life. An ad Hock pyrotechnic activated bayonet is mounted underneath as a last ditch weapon.

Awesome write up and story. I'd be interested in seeing the painted models for these.

Very nice! Is there an online colour program for making alternative schemes? Eventually I have to actually paint something.

Wargamer I have blanks for what I used above as well as in battliod mode 5 view. I colored them in Photoshop. I made them from the schematics in Variable master file VF-1 book. If you want I can email them to you or anyone that wants them. I have them both as a Jpeg and PSD (Photoshop) files.
I also have both the Super and Strike fighter mode 5 views but they are a little less clear lines but not really noticeable.

I've never tried Photoshop before. Is it very expensive or difficult to use?

It can be expensive if you get the latest version.
I use it for work.

Might be a nice purchase since I like to post photos... is there a version you would recommend?

Check out GIMP. It's a stupid name, but a really nice alternative to Photoshop. Just as good and a LOT less money.

Yes GIMP is open source, I was going to mention it but I was in between class at work and forgot.

There's also Pixlr Editor. It's a free photoshop clone that runs in the browser and integrates with Google Drive. I'll often use it for small jobs instead of booting up photoshop.

I've got a different route for my Squadron. For awhile I've been reading up about the Soviet Air Force during WWII, specifically the 588th Night Bomber Regiment, the so-called "Night Witches" all female squadron.
so, may I present the 110th Guards Frontal Aviation Regiment(or VVF-110 in U.N. SPACY parlance).
(The picture I found on DeviantArt).
The idea is, following the Global War, the Russian Federation "transferred" two Squadrons, but it took nearly a decade for them to "upgrade to Veritech squadrons" due to "red tape".
The 110th is all female, with most of the pilots from Eastern Europe with a sprinkling of Commonwealth pilots.
Commanding Officer: Senior Lieutenant Klara Ilyina
They fly Russian modified VF-1s(designation: VF-1bis) that have been modified to carry Russian weapons(the UB-32 rocket pod, modified R-73/AA-11 Archer AAM, fuel tanks). VVF-110 and VF-703(The Knights of Malta) were part of Operation "Circus", a series of raids against the Zentraedi Fleet in an effort to engage them to whittle down their numbers. However, these raids failed due to the larger then expected numbers of Battle Pods.
I've already got two of the fighters primed, just need to find my paints before I can start.

my idea for my valkyrie squadron is VFA-106 - Spearhead squadron. this is based on a real-life Israeli F15 106 squadron. the unit is lead by Commander Shira Dahan and their insignia, which i will probably print on Decal paper to use on the models: no particular reason for going with the Isrealis. I just like the look of that camo. I also have a GHQ Micro armour Israeli army (Merkava 4s, MAgach 7Ds and Achzarits) they look sci-fi enough to fit in with the robotech stuff. Destroids will be in the IDF green Gray and Sinai Grey(bluish grey) the paint jobs on the Micro armour will be getting repainted when i do the Destroids so they match.

So my squadron is based off my old navy squadron VFA 25 the Fist of the Fleet. Now VFA 25 never piloted Tomcats, instead they we're piloting A-1's during the Vietnam conflict (they got a gun kill on a MiG-17!)
Mine will be named VFA 25 Fist of the SDF. A Squadron of mostly VF-1A's, these are highly trained pilots who rely on squadron tactics to get the job done. They are commanded by LCDR Jake "Paladin" O'Maley who trained under Fokker.

Ha, I love the A-1, and well the Fist sorta flew Tomcats... (Iceman's Squadron in TopGun was the fists) I like the old classic 60-80's bright paint the fighters had, I made this one to compliment My VF-111 Squadron. VFA-86 Sidewinders

My Squadron is based off the squadron I had in the RPG in High School, many moons ago, The GM named it: Lilac Squadron. It lasted throughout the trip back to Earth and all through the Malcontent era. For some odd reason it was always on the opposite defense sector than Skull and Vermillion. Color Scheme is Lilac (of course) with Grey Wing Stripes for the 1A's. The Flight leader has a little bit extra grey. The Squad leader has White in the place of grey. Still have not figured out how to paint the 1S. Some kind of combination of Grey, Lilac and White. The 1R's I have will either be a dark green or a sandy color. My Second starter box (as a Kickstarter I got 2), I will likely paint the more usual Brownies, with a Max and Ben thrown in, jus cuz

I'm going with the classic scheme for my Battlepods (at least the first 24. Not sure if I want to build and paint the remaining half of a Showdown). Destroids are also in classic colors from the animation.
For my Valks, I'm doing 3 flights of 4. Skull squadron is being painted in DYRL colors and will also have corresponding models equipped with FAST packs if those ever get released. Amother flight is in low visibility gray and is based off SVF-13 in the Valkyrie Master file 2. They will get corresponing battloid with the GBP-1 armor if those ever come out. The third flight are brownies based off SVF-20 from Valkyrie Master file 1. They'll also get the Jotun pack.
I'm also doing a 2 plane flight of -1Rs in Wolf team colors as Jack Archer and Izzy and a 2 plane flight of -1As in space low visibilitt (black/dark blue?).
The different colors will allow me to distinguish the different squads and add-ons.
