Played the first large game of Robotech this weekend at the club. We played an invasion of Macross Island scenario: the UEDF forces had to escort a VIP vehicle off the board so the Senator could get to bomb shelter. The Zentradi simply had to kill all humans.
The VIP appeared at the end of turn 3, and would have taken 3 turns to leave the board. Zentradi had one Attrition Squadron, one Attack Squadron and one Artillery Squadron. For the UEDF it was one Valkyrie Squadron with a VF-1S and two Area Denial Squadrons with one Command Destroid.
The UEDF were all but routed, thanks in part to a total flubbing of the combat rules that favored the Zents.
The Zents started with the Artillery Squadron on their left, the Attack Squadron in the center, and the Attrition Squadron on their right. The UEDF set up the Command Area Denial Squadron opposite the Zent Artie pods and the other Area Denial Squadron opposite the Attrition Squadron. The Valkyrie Squadron was split, setting up in the center but on the flanks of the Attack Squadron. All the Valks began in Guardian mode to utilize their missiles.
The Zentradi drew first blood with their Artillery Squadron, though all of the heavy missiles fell short of their intended targets.
In the second turn, the UEDF knocked out a light artie pod and met the Zentradi battlepod advances up the center with the Valkyries. Every volley of missiles from the Guardians missed their targets.
In the third round, the brave Valkyrie lieutenant bit the dust as his VF-1J went down in flames; a Tomahawk also succumbed to an overwhelming artillery barrage.
Two more Valkyries (including the VF-1S) were lost in the third turn along with a couple Regult battlepods. At the end of Turn 3, the Senator's vehicle appeared on the board and began its run for it.
UEDF got the initiative at the beginning of the fourth turn, but to no avail. After taking out a pod or two, another Tomahawk and a Defender were destroyed. As the Zentradi activated their Attack Squadron and surrounded the Senator's vehicle, the game was conceded.
Everyone had lots of fun though, and is excited to play again (with the correct rules this time!).
