So, working on a Unit Special Card:
Ace Pilot
Points: 5
Mecha: Any UEDF Mecha except the Monster Destroid or Ghost Unmanned Fighter.
+1 Pilot
*Ace Pilots have proven themselves time and again in the heat of battle. Taking on countless foes and overwhelming numbers always to emerge from the smoke scarred, but unbeaten. In Battle, Aces are a shining example to their Squadron and have saved their friend's necks more times than they can count. To the enemy, the Ace is a target and a strategic objective who is marked for termination at all costs. Most Ace pilots customize their Mecha with personal paint or modifications which enhance their already impressive skill set.
At the beginning of game, the Ace must select one of the following that applies for the duration of the battle: May Re-roll a single dodge, attack or anti-missile roll per game or May Shield any friendly Mecha (even one that is not in the Ace's own squadron) within 6" as per close formation once per game or add 2 command points for a single turn once per game.
Thoughts?

Looks good, and I would love to get a table in which you could point stat more of the traits that show up on various characters.
My general idea when running a campaign would be to have one hero character that you could add more traits onto the longer he/she survived. Of course with how quick and lethal combat can be, just getting removed from the battle wouldn't be enough to lose your character. Each time you got shot down there should be a chance that they might have, limped away with their mech intact, lost their mech but bailed out, lost their mech but got captured, or possibly got killed. Having more traits stated out like you did with Ace though would help keep the scenario's balanced.

I would consider throwing in +1 gunnery as well to make it comparable to a 1J or Command Destroid but without the Leadership...also Piloting;s just not all that useful.

Piloting is useful when dodging, which I have found to be a big thing in the games I have played...and I agree, it should be +1 Gunner and +1 Piloting in addition to the once per game bonus...just didn't want to go overboard before there was discussion

I think I did this pretty much exactly the same but I also did a prodigy pilot that was +1 GUN and I may have given both a +1 LDR. Looking into it, I actually made a "veteran" and a "prodigy" so I could ace to that with maybe +1 GUN and +1 PIL and 1 LDR and for 10 points... the only problem I see with that approach is that it makes Max, for example, a bad deal. Other than that, I think you'd need to limit to 1 per squadron and require squadron size to be four at the start. Another interesting idea would be to work in some mechanics from the pen and paper game to modify pilots through character development.

I think that Max is underpowered anyways. He should be beefier, but also cost more points. I feel that way with all the special characters to some degree. In a story as character driven as Robotech is...you'd think the characters would have more teeth on the table top. This game should be about the characters when people want to use them. I'm planning on making a better Max card in the future. Basically, I think the game could easily be set up to have multiple versions of a character to reflect their point in time/experience level in the story. By the end of the Macross saga (the final assault on earth and also during reconstruction) Max should be better than his card demonstrates. While some people don't want the game to devolve into "hero hammer"...the game itself should be about the characters..and I can't think of any game that could do it as good as this game when it comes to caring about the characters. "hero hammer" fits for Robotech.
