If I give a destroid the command upgrade and then put a special character in that destroid...do the bonuses from both upgrades apply?

Looks like it. I don't see anything in the rules saying they don't.

I believe that both the Destroid command upgrade and the special character upgrade count as "Special" upgrades and that only 1 can be added to each core force card. So I don't think that you can actually take both for the same unit.

While they do use the word "special" around the characters a lot, I don't think they count the same as a special upgrade. For example getting a VF-1S in your squad is a special upgrade, but you should be able to then buy Roy to pilot your 1S. For that same reason I would let a character that drives a destroid pilot a command version.

Special is just a description, characters have no effect on squadron organization.

indeed. characters are special in a generic sense but they are not Special Force Cards and thus not subject to the same limits. That said, yes you can stack the command upgrade with characters. the command upgrade is just a piece of hardwaare. Dietrich makes an excellent choice to slap into a command destroid. Or alternatively, you could spread things out and have him not in the command destroid, spreading out your special abilities and leadership so all your eggs aren;t in one basket

In my opinion, they should have called the character cards something like Unique Characters to help separate them from the squad building structure.
