So this came up on the Facebook group but got a bit lost in the shuffle.
You can replace your VF-1J (and a 1A) in a squad with a VF-1R, and the 1R explicitly states that it keeps the improved Piloting and Gunnery of the 1J because it replaces the machine, not the pilot.
But nothing says it keeps the Leadership rule, or any other special rules for that matter, which is why the VF-1R stats include all the usual Valkyrie special rules.
Spirit of the rule would suggest that a VF-1R(J) would still have Leadership since it's natural to assume the leadership comes form the character inside the mecha.
But the Rules as Written don;t seem to support it.
They do explain in the definition of Leadership that it can also represent specialized sensors or command, control and communications gear (like the Recon pod, or the ELINT valk, or the Command Destroid module), so maybe the 1J has specialized command gear that isn't replicated in the 1R and therefore isn't carried over? not saying that's the intent, but it's an intellectual justification if you need one.
Thoughts?
Am I missing something and the RAW does support giving leadership?
Does anyone think it was itnended to work this way?
Will it be in the errata/FAQ?
Are you less likely to use the 1R upgrade if you do lose Leadership?
Frankly, I've always felt the 1R upgrade was a bit of a no-brainer. I don't plan to field big 6-8 man units of valks anyway, so paying a few extra points to make your valks tougher and give them a better anti-missile system (only real use for those mini-missiles), but losing Leadership would make me rethink that.
