A thread to talk about my attempt to make an open hand for the extra box set battloid. I started with one of the fist arms and used a couple different files to sand down the palm. I've cut out 5 lengths of sprue to carve the fingers and hopefully everything will attach well! More to come.

Here's a thought: Given that the one finger we do see extended is really thin...why not create a palm then just cheat and clip some head lasers off of unused heads and use them as the basis for your fingers? Cut them up and file the edges at angles so they can be reassembled in a form other than just straight out, get them to the right lengths while you;re at it, but I think that would be about the right size for fingers and you could make most of a hand from one excess VF-1S head.
Edit: now that I think about it, a pair of jet-mode VF-1S lasers would make a good base for a palm...file the already slightly flat edges flatter so they mate up, file down one of the round sides so it enfs up flat, leave the other side round as a base for the thumb...then all you have to do is make a couple cuts on the lasers so you have finger joints, steal another laser from somewhere for the tumb (mabe the thicker head gun from an unused 1R head for the thumb...)
Damn, now I wanna try that.

Someone gave me the same idea about using the lasers/antenna as the fingers. I would have to compare the 1S head to see if it matches the width of the hands. I am not sure of the size, but sanding down the fist works fine.
I've already cut and glued up one hand.. I need to do some sanding once the glue is cured. But the initial result is great! You have to try it out!

I'm working on an antenna hand right now, and so far it looks good. the jet mode 1S lasers work well. file the flat side a little flatter so it's at less of an angle so the fingers line up more, clip one rounded side off and the result is a palm exactly the length of a gunpod handle. the fingers are too long but that's easy to fix, just need a thumb, and that could come from trimming the fingers Edit: Woot! I did it! Took all of about 5 minutes once I figured it out. Palm side down showing it next to an unaltered laser dealie. At this stage I just flattened the flat side more, glued them together and flattened one of the round edges. Flipped so you can see the 'palm' Then finally finished! I just scored and bent the fingers with my clippers, trimmed them to length and built a thumb out of the scraps.

The build looks awesome Galahad! Here's my build. The fingers still need to be cleaned up. The fingers are built from spare antenna/lasers on the fighter mode sprue. The thumb is cut from a sprue length.

I like the pose on yours a lot more. Very dynamic and evocative. I can picture it reaching out for a tiny falling minmei

Thanks! This is going on my extra battloid doing a power move, but I plan to make more.

nice. Looks like he could use a blast mark on his chest and a giant plate glass window to fall through

Very cool both of you! Way more fidly detail than I have the patience for though. Can't wait to see them painted!

Try my method sometime, it takes like ten minutes the first time ;-)

Very nice work! I'm thinking of taking my extra battloid and having him straddling a downed Glaug while giving a particularly rude finger gesture.

I've seem the finger gesture done before by using a pointer hand and just clipping and moving the finger, it was pretty effective

I did the gesture with one of my 40K marine Sargent.

Games Workshop used to do quite a few minis giving the bird, actually.

LOL, fair enough. Still easily done with a fist or pointing hand and an extra bit of antenna

Excellent work! You've really got a lot of miles out of the base pieces and the open hand is sweet! Only thing I see is that you could use a needle file to gently round the finger tips and that bad boy will look like a cast hand... I might have to quit being lazy and steal your design for it.

Thanks! I did go back and round the finger tips after I saw these photos. But go ahead and steal away.
