From the start I never really thought of this game as an alternative for competitive play. As mentioned in other threads there are too few armies, and the units are based more on the plot than created for balanced. There are far better games out there for that style. What did capture my imagination, and the reason I bought so much, was the opportunity to play massive scale battles in the Macross/Robotech universe. As I finally start getting my units assembled and painted, I want to try and get some rules down to play large scale battles that take place over several zones.
The setup in my mind would be a group of six or so zones in which various units start out, along with the ability to bring in reinforcements from either a pool or from other zones. In the case of battles on planets, there would also be a few sky zones in which units like Gnerls, Valkyries in fighter mode, and power armor would really shine. As the battle progressed, the players would take turns on choosing which zone is going to focused on next. Some factors that came to mind while thinking about this are as follows.
Monsters: A battle like this would really give the Monsters a chance to take full advantage of their long range. Their main guns are so massive that they would have the ability to fire in from off map. They will of course want to be well protected since if successful, the zone they are actually placed in will be targeted in order to take them out.
Valkyries in fighters mode: This style would give the jets more of a reason to be used. Whether it is for fighting in higher altitude, or hauling ass across zones in order to reinforce an area that is in danger of falling.
The Armada: With some of the advantages for the UEDF shown so far, I also think the Zentraedi would have opportunity to bring in far more units than the regular games which are balanced for one map. Where the UEDF has the advantage of a fewer, more versatile units, the Zentraedi have an armada at their command in which more units can be brought in to help plug holes.
The Sky: I mentioned before that I had envisioned some sky zones, one of the mechanics for wanting the skies clear for either side will be added ease of getting your reinforcements around the zones. Ether making it faster for Valkyries to come in from off map, or for more Zentraedi to land from space.
Anyhow I've got a lot of ideas here but still need to work it out on paper. If anyone else has other ideas or suggestions I'd love to hear them.
