Ok. I want to close the loop on this Varnish idea.
I painted a layer of varnish on top of the Testors enamel paint to see if that would work any better. Well, not really. The varnish protected the enamel paint from rubbing off but the problem was that it also absorbed the dry erase marker. I couldn't erase the mark after only a few seconds of writing.
As you can see from the second picture, the dry erase "1" did not come off very well. I guess we can put this one to bed and call this a fail.

Now, Megatrons2nd and his decal idea DOES work.
I went out and bought a roll of the Self-laminating decals from Walmart. $6.98 for 25 feet.
I then cut a little piece into a square and glued it onto the base of one of my battlepods.

Success!
The little decals stay on just fine and you can write and erase with a dry erase marker. No problem.
Obviously, The only issue now is that if you do this, you won't be able to base (flock) your minis.
Oh well. You can't have it all...

What about putting it on the little tab in the back?

Hmmm, not too sure about that. The little tab in the back seems a little small to write numbers on it.

Thanks for the follow up and experimentation CappenVerra. I might be leaning towards painting different washers since most of my minis can have a magnet in the base. But this is a great solution!
