I wanted to post this thought here to get any other thoughts on what I'm deciding on.
Since VF's have different options (MLOPS, long range, gravity bomb), I have been waffling on what to do with these options on the model. I don't want to magnetize all the various options and have tried to come up with different solutions for mounting these.
Ultimately, I decided to not worry about it and attached what I wanted. This morning I thought about what magnets to get for the bases. I figured that I would be drill straight through the base to pop the magnet in. That got me thinking of all the extra missile bits. If I were to mount the options like the MLOPS and long range missiles on a nail or a sprue piece, I could add that option to the base so I know what option the VF is using.
That way, I can use whatever I want on the model and still have a good way to remind me of who is using what.
Thoughts? Good idea, bad idea, too complicated idea, different idea?

I've been pondering the same thing.
I've got some 1.5x1 mm magnets that I'm planning on using. I like the marker on the base idea, but doesn't the payload stick out enough from the wings to see it, and the three options are reasonably distinct?

The payloads can be seen just fine under the wing, but I'm trying to think about times when you want to get a new upgrade. There isn't a way to switch out the different options under the wing unless each one is magnetized or using some other system.
Doing this allows me freedom to use what I want on the model and have a way to mark what upgrades a VF may have because I don't want to magnetize each option and all the wings.

That seems like a good idea. I will just be spending more money on new minis. LOL I like more minis!

Ah, you mean (like you said originally) you don't want to magnetize everything but just build the models with no upgrades and have a single maker on the base?
Seems like a reasonable idea. Sure would save a whole lot of hassle!

I decided to put the missle pod and the three pack of missle both on mine (1 of each on each wing) more visually interesting to me. I intend to use squadron markings anyway so I should be able to differentiate which squad has which upgrade.

I finally got some time to get these options put together. A bit of sprue and some washers from my last hobby and here's some missile options. Here's the sprue where I cut the bits (The knife is pointing to the area) The bits. The bottom needs to be sanded flat. Everything put together.

Very nice! Will be easy for sure to tell which unit has what option!

Thanks,
I need to remember to make two sets of the bombs and paint them different so there is a difference between long range missiles and gravity bombs.

That is a really great idea! I'm going to be stealing it, but elevating the ordnance a little bit on a brass pin.

Sorry, I'm not sure what the question is referring too. What scale is Flames of War? I believe it's 15mm.

Looks good, just use a bit of milliput and sandpaper to smooth over the magnet on the base and it will be invisible once painted!

The other advantage is that once you use up the load, you remove the marker, and it's easy to remember that model is out of missiles.

I love this idea! Consider it stolen.
I mostly play Zentraedi and I find that I'm having a hard time identifying which model in my large squads are carrying damage from turn to turn. I can see using this type of set-up to put markers on the models to help tell them apart. (Numbers to match the cards, MDC ticks, etc.)
So far, I've used small dice beside the mecha but found that it gets a bit awkward when you move mecha around or when your opponent allocates his dice as shooting markers.

Keeping track of damage on pods is tricky, because there are so many of them, and they all look alike. The best way is probably to mark them with a number. The bases have the little tab on the back (or front, if that's your preference) where you can write a number. Also, you can mark a number on the pod. My plan - when I have time to pain them, is to give each one a number (corresponding to the numbers on the cards) and put it on the pod to look like kill marks. I'll probably use tally marks rather than some clever alien numbering system to make it easier for myself and my opponent to read.

I bought a bunch of mini plastic poker chips that I'll use as damage makers. I haven't been able to play yet, but that seemed easier than having dice has makers.

Hmmmm,...
I wonder if a mix of Popatachi and Thorfinn's ideas would work? You magnetize little numbered markers that get added to the Battlepod bases. That way, you can switch out the battlepods depending on squad composition and don't have to dedicate a specific pod to a number permanently.
What to you guys think? Too much trouble?...

I was trying to find a tab/or gloss paint that I could use Dry Erase Markers on, so I could change the number/squad if I ever need to.

If you do find one, please share. That, I think, would be the simplest solution of all.

Someone said that Gloss Enamel Paint works with Dry Erase Markers. I haven't tried it yet, but if you are actually to the point of painting, maybe you can try. I just finished building my Zentraedi, and am now starting the UEDF stuff. I won't get to painting until those are done, so about a month.

Gloss enamel paint eh? Like the Testors stuff?
Worth a shot. I'll go and pick up a small pot and give it a try this week. I'll post back with the results.

So, here is a test I ran with Testors enamel paint (silver). I painted a round circle of silver on the base where I could then write the number of the battlepod for identification purposes.
This is what it looks like with the number (#1) on the paint.
Unfortunately, it did not erase completely, even after only a few seconds between the writing and the attempt at erasing with a facial tissue.
As you can see, the marker was absorbed into the paint and did not come off cleanly. Also, I suspect that the ink solution of the marker may have eaten into the paint because some of it started to come off as well (even after over 24 hours of drying time for the enamel paint).
Too bad, as this could have been a quick solution to the pesky pod identification problem. I have repainted the patch again and will now try and put a coat of matt varnish over it to see if in interacts better with the dry erase marker.
I'll let you all know how it pans out tomorrow. (Gotta let the paint and then the varnish dry...)

Your pod looks great! Now I need to get you to paint mine.
Not Really, I'll get to it......................eventually.

I found that Wal Mart, and Staples(at least online) have dry erase decal sheets. They are about the size of a sheet of paper. Not sure about thickness or if they can be cut down at all yet. Something a bit worrying about them is that they say reusable, so I'm not sure if they will stick very well or not, especially at the size needed.
