Houserule: "Covering Fire"
Covering Fire allows a mecha to spend one additional Command Point to intercept and shoot down missile attacks targeted at any Friendly Mecha within 2" who is both in LOS and inside the weapon's Firing Arc, as if they were directed at the Covering mecha instead.
This Command Point cost is in addition to the normal cost of shooting down a missile (so 2 points if using a normal weapon system, 1 point if using an Anti-Missile weapon system).
The normal rules still apply that only one attempt may be made to shoot down a given volley of missiles, so Covering fire cannot be used if the mecha you are Covering has already attempted to shoot down the missiles. however, the Covering mecha can still attempt to shoot at missiles directed at itself as normal. If the missile has the Blast type and both mecha are under its template then the Covering mecha can only make one attempt to shoot it down, not one for itself and one for the mecha that it is covering.
It's a fairly simple rule and it's just there to give mecha like the Phalanx who lack a practical anti-missile system a way to defend themselves. Technically the missiles from the Phalanx could be used to shoot down incoming missile attacks, but it's a huge waste. Likewise, certain Zentradi mecha like Recovery and Recon pods have no weapons at all and are therefore terribly vulnerable. this gives them a way to be a bit more survivable. Other mecha, like Zentradi heavy weapon pods have secondary weapons they can use, but the odds aren't as good. For the same command point cost you could have a friendly anti-missile system cover you and have a better shot at surviving.
It also gives you another reason to stay in close formation.
Thoughts?
